Declawing

Early Puppy Care for Yorkies and Maltese

At Maryann Yorkie Maltese Companion Co., the health, comfort, and long-term well-being of our puppies always come first. One of the early care steps we take is careful dewclaw management, which is often confused with “declawing” in cats. These are not the same.

Declawing (common in cats) involves amputating the last bone of each toe and is widely considered inhumane.

Dewclaw management (done in dogs) involves trimming the small extra toe located higher up on a puppy’s front legs (back legs if present), but we do not remove them as they are left intact for these breeds.

Why We Manage Dewclaws

Safety: Yorkies and Maltese are playful small dogs. Loose dewclaws can snag during play, so we trim them regularly to prevent injuries.

Health: Prevents tearing, infections, or discomfort without removal.

Breed Standard: Natural dewclaws are preferred for show-quality Yorkies and Maltese.
